CoolTone from Coolsculpting

CoolTone logoCoolTone™ is the latest body contouring innovation from Allergan (the makers of Coolsculpting®) that uses magnetic muscle stimulation (MMS) technology designed to trigger strong muscle contractions that your body could not otherwise achieve on its own. Treatments are non-invasive, non-surgical and FDA-cleared to strengthen, tone, and firm these three separate areas:

  • abdomen
  • buttocks
  • thighs.

Magnetic Muscle Stimulation

CoolTone's unique Magnetic Muscle Stimulation (MMS) technology selectively delivers strong pulses to muscle tissues noninvasively. Your brain is the natural way to trigger a muscle contraction. However, external stimulation, such as that offered by CoolTone's MMS technology, can recruit more muscle fibers and generate stronger contractions for better results.

CoolTone bypasses the skin, fat and nerves to safely target the muscle layers and induce involuntary muscle contractions. Whether targeting abdomen, buttocks or thighs, CoolTone strengthens, tones and firms the muscles in the treated area, resulting in a more defined and toned appearance.

CoolTone — How it works

The CoolTone applicator generates a magnetic field that creates a current when it passes through a conductive material. Muscles are good conductors of magnetic fields, unlike skin and fat, which are poor conductors. The induced current is stronger in the muscle layer and the body responds to these contractions by strengthening its muscle fibers and improving muscle conditioning.

Who are the best candidates for CoolTone?

According to Dr. Hamori,  patients best suited for CoolTone would be somewhat fit patients who are looking to have more definition of their abs. She adds that CoolTone can also be an effective treatment to narrow the separation of the rectus abdominis muscles (abs) that occurs with pregnancy, and which traditionally required surgery to  correct. As far as the buttock is concerned,  Dr. Hamori says that CoolTone elevates the buttock by strengthening the gluteal muscles. "Think of it as doing 500 squats!" She also reveals that there is a small amount of fat reduction with the process due to the energy used by the contracting muscle. While studies show mild fat reduction and moderate muscle increase, she reminds candidates that "it does not replace the gym, but helps improve contour."

Coolsculpting vs. CoolTone

How does CoolTone compare to Coolsculpting? Good question! While they are both effective body contouring treatments from Allergan, Coolsculpting is a fat-reduction treatment that uses a supercooling technology to eliminate fat cells. CoolTone on the other hand treats muscles only, bypassing fat, to strengthen muscle and build muscle tone.

Both treatments offer the best results for people who are already fit and are looking to fine-tune their body shape. The two treatments can complement one another — Coolsculpting to reduct fat and CoolTone to strengthen, firm and tighten after fat reduction.

Technical note: CoolTone has 50 percent more magnetic strength than the leading competitor Emsculpt (1.35 T versus 0.9 T) at the point of contact.

CoolTone Treatments — What to Expect

The state-of-the-art system features liquid-cooled applicators for maximum comfort. A CoolTone treatment is not painful, although you will feel a series of strong muscle contractions. Patients may giggle and smile when first experiencing the treatment, but will tolerate it well once familiar with the rhythm and feeling of the machine.

Multiple sessions are recommended, typically two treatments a week for 2 weeks, although your treatment plan may vary.

CoolTone Results

CoolTone's clinical studies showed an estimated 16% increase in muscle mass and reduction of fat measured two months after the fourth treatment. However, some patients noticed increased muscle tone of the abs one day following treatment.

CoolTone should be used with caution in patients with Graves disease (an autoimmune disorder that causes overactive thyroid), active bleeding disorders, or seizure disorders.
